Khosk Kap

If you are not familiar with Armenian traditions, Armenians usually do not do a proposal/engagement the American way.

In Armenian traditions, usually, the family of the guy will go the family of the girl's house to request permission from the girl's family for marriage and that's how the initial proposal is done (called Khosk Kap in Armenian). After this an engagement date is set, where usually a ceremony is held for all friends and relatives to come and celebrate. Sometimes this engagement is skipped and combined with the wedding itself.

In our case, I actually proposed to Karina the American way first and then my family and I went to Karina's house for the Khosk Kap which was on May 15, 2005. You can see some pictures of our Khosk Kap here.

Engagement

Our engagement (or Neshan in Armenian) was on October 2nd, 2005. The engagement ceremony and reception was held at MGM Hall in Glendale. We had about 260 guests. Although this may seem like a lot of people, it is a normal size engagement for most Armenians.

Before the ceremony we went to Brand Park in Glendale and took some nice pictures, which you can see here. Karina wore this Victorian style dress and she looked amazingly beautiful. I could not take my eyes off of her the whole day.

In Armenian traditions a priest comes to the hall (or the couple and their families go to the church) to make it all official. The priest will pray and read verses from the bible similar to a wedding ceremony. In our case the priest came to the hall.

After the ceremony everybody enjoyed dinner and danced to music by a DJ that played Armenian, Persian, Arabic, HipHop and Trance music all night long.

During one of the music breaks, I got up to the microphone and gave a speech. Although, I had not prepared a speech, I thanked all guests, my parents and Karina's mom and family for bringing up such a wonderful daughter.

The centerpieces and flowers were provided by Blossom Florist (Ara and Adrineh) and we thank them for such a beautiful job. We had colorful Beta Fishes in the flower vases on all the tables.
